On a beautiful Autumns day the Strikers played host to a Dunsborough team that had a very impressive victory the previous week, so the whole squad knew they were in for a fierce contest. The following seventy minutes showed what depth of talent we have here in the South West, as both sides showed fantastic skill and team play.

It really was end to end stuff and was great entertainment for the supporters from both teams. It was going to take something special to break the deadlock and that is what happened, as Jayden Stammers made a penetrating run from the defence and laid a great pass to Kelby Guthrie Phelps who beat his opponent and squared it inside to Sol Masters, who curled it into the corner of the net. This was followed up very quickly by another great piece of individual play from Jayden Stammers who curled a shot in from a corner.

Two nil up and dominating play, it looked like this was going to be another solid victory to the Strikers, but the Dunsborough team lifted their intensity to another level, and pulled one back through their main striker James Black. Dunsborough were flying, and putting the Strikers defence under great pressure, but great goalkeeping from Jesse Gunnis and solid defensive play from Jake Sales, Jesse Martin and Daniel Murtagh kept them out.

The midfield of Kade Bougoure, Adrian Woodward and Zac Harney were working overtime, and out of the blue another great strike form Jake Graebner Bond found the net to make it 3-1, back came the Dunsborough team and scored a second from another goal by James Black. The whistle blew for half time and everyone had a chance to draw breath such was the pace of the game.

The second half didn’t let us down as it was like a heavy weight boxing fight as both teams attacked , Jake Cockin in his first game for the season, was putting the Dunsborough defence under pressure and then a well worked move saw the Dunsborough defender stop the ball on the goal line with his hands with the goal keeper well beaten, this saw the player sent off and the resultant penalty well taken by Jayden Stammers, increasing the gap by two goals which the Strikers held to the final whistle. Congratulations to both teams on a great game. Eagle Boys Player of the match was Jayden Stammers and the Yallingup Maze award went to Jake Sales.

Margaret River Strikers 4 v Dunsborough 2

The 7’s Goblins played the Groms in the local derby at Margaret River on the weekend. The boys have been training hard and all the skills were on show during the game.

Huon House was strong in attacking the goals, and Jack Holzier was excellent in defence. Jaxon Deighton made a hat trick and continued his good form from last week. Zahn Johnston dominated the mid field, Rayan Amedi showed his powerful kicking style.

Lleyton Brooks was working hard all over the pitch and Timon Bonelli showed his flair on the ball. Kalani Waterer showed some fast turns of speed and accurate passing.

Dunsborough Predators- 2 v FMR Dragons- 5

Awesome playing conditions in Dunsborough allowed for a great display of football and these teams fought out an epic battle.

The Dragons had the early field position and it was Brendan Clark who put pressure on the keeper from a throw in to put the visitors’ ahead early. The Dragons soon added another when Kai Grabner-Bond beautifully controlled a clearance ball from Margaret Rivers’ defence and a quick through ball saw Riley Demunari coolly slot the ball on his left foot past the keeper.

Dunsborough were far from out of the contest and their pressure finally told when Conor Wolfman pounced on a loose ball to finish a great strike passed the Dragons last line. He repeated the dose a short time later which had the game locked up at half time.

Margaret River needed to find their target when passing and most of their first half problems would disappear. To the players credit they were much more clinical in the second half and took control of the game from the opposition who were affording the Dragons a lot of space in midfield. Rory Stevenson after a fantastic second half was unable to return with a corked thigh so this saw Jack Kneebone play further up field and his attack on the ball and passing was a feature of the second half.

Josh Brown took advantage of the extra space in midfield to set up Ryner Koster for a regulation finish and Brendan Clark added another after a similar run to give the visitors some breathing space.

Our defence was holding firm with Tarn Staveley proving an impenetrable force at sweeper. Conor White and Hamish White were adding to the Predators frustration and when Riley, with one of his many crosses finally the regular goal scoring boot of Tyron Bradshaw the result was sealed.

Jed Mattinson was unlucky when a late strike found the woodwork and a fall in the penalty area was ruled to be “play on”.

A great team effort and a worthy opponent saw all players leave the pitch with their heads high. Another impressive effort from the Dragons, which is comforting, as we meet some more tough opposition in the coming weeks we will need to be bringing out our best games.

Happy Mothers’ Day ladies.

The Marlins were keen to start their second game of the season. They looked fantastic with their new jackets and uniforms.

They played some great soccer to start the match, the midfield of Jace, Sol and Annika were winning lots of tackles and providing the forwards James and Jim with lots of shots at goal. Carla made a great run on goal but was tackled just before shooting.

Jim scored a great goal after pressuring the GMAS defence and the Marlins went into half time full of confidence. Molly made some important saves in the Marlins goal when required and passed the ball out to our defenders really well.

At half time the Marlins talked about keeping our positions and passing around the GMAS team. Those instructions were executed perfectly in the second half and the team started to grow in confidence and move the ball around.

The defence of Alex, Angus and Tomo did their usual fantastic job of stopping just about all the attacks that GMAS could muster. When GMAS did shoot on goal Jace made some good saves. The second half highlight came when the Marlins got a free kick on the edge of the penalty box.

Molly struck the free kick perfectly into the top corner for a goal that David Beckham would have been proud of!!! Then Sol who had been suffering with a sore stomach snatched a third goal for the Marlins with a great long range shot.

The coach and parents were rightly proud of such a great all-round performance and I look forward to the season ahead, well done to the Marlins!

Special thanks to Simon for reffing the first half and Tim for reffing the second half and Kathy for organizing just about everything else!.

FMR Marlins v GMAS Cyclones

The Marlins first game of the season was anticipated by players and parents alike!!!

The Vasse Falcons provided a stern test and the Marlins started brightly and even though there were a few first time players they soon settled helped by an early goal from Sol, a superb long range effort. Alex, Angus and Tomo provided solid defence.

James went in goal for the first half and he made one unbelievably brave save which unfortunately resulted in injury which meant Alex had to take the gloves. Sol was everywhere and combined well with Annika and Jace in midfield to keep the ball for Marlins and feed Jim and Molly in attack as the Marlins put the Falcons under pressure.

The Marlins were unlucky not to get more goals and in the second half they conceded several as the Falcons hit some fantastic shots on target.

But the Marlins regained their composure and attacked with Jim causing the Falcons defence all sorts of problems with his direct running. He was unlucky not to score after hitting the goalie and defenders time after time. For his efforts all through the game and considering this was his first game of soccer the player of the day was Jim.

Special thanks to Simon for reffing the first half. The coach and parents were rightly proud of such a great all-round performance and I look forward to a great season ahead, well done to the Marlins!

FMR Marlins v Vasse Falcons

Strikers Bag Six In Goal Blitz2012-05-09T10:23:50Z2012-05-09T10:23:50Zhttp://66.244.148.11/news/match-reports/youth-league-boys/837-strikers-bag-six-in-goal-blitz.htmlPaul Brownpaul@bigme.com.au
Margaret River Strikers 6 v GMAS 0

There was a buzz in the air on the first day of the 2012 Soccer season, as months of training was now going to be put to the test in the first game, fielding mostly 16 year olds and facing a lot bigger opposition, the Strikers may have felt a bit daunted by what was in front of them, but they needn’t have worried, as the crisp passing and movement of this Margaret River team had the GMAS chasing shadows, and proved why they were winners and went unbeaten in the League last year.

It wasn’t long before the Strikers took the lead through a well taken goal by Kelby Guthrie Phelps and you thought that this was going to be a big score line but the solid goal keeping of the GMAS Goal Keeper and poor finishing in front of goal kept the score line the same till half time.

The half time team talk was of moving the ball faster in the attacking area and communicating more as a team, this had the desired effect as they laid siege on the GMAS goal and wave after wave of attack kept going and finally Kelby added to his total, this broke the back of the GMAS team and a well worked move was cooly finished by Sol Masters, who went on a goal scoring blitz and added two more for his hat trick and Zac Harney added a sixth for good measure.

This was a great result by the Strikers and they were well worth the win, special mentions to Daniel Murtagh on a great debut game for the Margaret River club and Jake Sales the captain, who led by example and congratulations to all the squad for great team play.

Eagle Boys Player of the day was Sol Masters and the Yallingup Maze award went to Daniel Murtagh.

Margaret River Strikers 6 v GMAS 0

(Pictures to come)

After a night of welcome rain a great day of soccer followed and the Dragons opened their 2012 season in fine style with a hard fought, convincing win against quality opposition.

After a solid start the home side went a goal up from the boot of Nathan Doig with a volley finish from a quality cross that will be hard to better. Nathan made great position all game and contributed hugely.

Our young defensive line were holding firm and Kai Grabner-Bond was solid between the posts showing a safe pair of hands.

Tyron Bradshaw went on to score twice before half time and he too was benefiting from some great build up play through Ryner Koster, Rory Stevenson and Brayden Gray. Jack Kneebone and Riley Demunari were also very mobile in mid field as the entire team benefited from some hard yards on the training pitch.

The Dragons took a while to settle into some reshuffling after half time and the Stingers were enjoying their best period of the game. They were unlucky with a few chances on goal however, now goalkeeper, Tarn Staveley was also showing a safe pair of hands in the goalkeepers role.

Tyron went onto complete his hatrick and has become a player who finds himself in the right place more often than not both in attack and defence. Ryner Koster finished off with two goals himself after some great team play through the midfield saw him with great opportunities in front of goal. He too was unlucky not to bag a third with a great volleyed effort late in the game.

A satisfying win and some great signs from all team members was welcome reward after some hard yards at training.

Well done Dragons.

A sunny day and promising ground conditions awaited Margaret River Glory for their first U13 match of the 2012 season.

Undeterred by a late start, Glory settled into the game early in the first half and played a strong attacking game.

The Crusaders’ defence was challenged but they were successful in fending of Glory until the pressure became too much and a handball error forced them into a penalty situation.

Glory relished the opportunity and Lucas Marrill secured goal number one.

In reply, the Crusaders lifted their game and went into attack but strong defence from India Stanley and Sam Lane in conjunction with some quick, long kick outs from Lani Payne in goal, kept Cornerstone at bay. In the second half, Glory continued their attack on the Crusaders’ goal supported by relentless pressure from Callum Stevenson and Brenton Tebbutt with a scoring shot presenting itself to Lucas Marrill again, which found the back of the net.

Wasting no time Luke Harney spotted another scoring opportunity and the third goal was secured.

Taylor Kevill and Shealy Carboni both put in strong performances in their soccer debut , transitioning from Netball with ease.

The Crusaders gallant performance unfortunately left them scoreless. Glory’s teamwork was rewarded and were pumped by their victory.

The Leeuwin Naturaliste Junior soccer cup finals season windup was on last week at the newly revamped Dunsborough playing fields and was the culmination of a fantastic season of soccer played by (total number in association) kids from ages 5-18 years old.

The weather turned on the sun for the event and the good weather made for some impressive games, showcasing the depth of talent within the region.

The first game to be played was the under 15’s and it set the pace for the rest of the day.

It was Margaret River Striker’s v Mackillop Storm .

The strikers had many chances at the first half but failed to capitalize and Storm over run them to the tune of 5-2, the score line did not reflect the effort Margaret River put in through the season, as this was the first game this year they have lost.

Next was the under 13’s champions, the Capel Wolves v Busselton Sharks, a very close game that was tied for most of the game, Spectators relished the tussle with a lot of cheering and encouragement from the sidelines.

The final score 3-2,Goal scorers

The Youth league girls was up with the Margaret river Breakers v Vasse Vultures, another close game that could have gone either way but the score at the end of game went to the MR Breakers, all the girls played with passion and did their clubs and code proud.

The Premier under 13’s was just that - a premier game, fast and furious but in the end the experience of the Port Geographe Seasiders overcome the Vasse rovers 3-1.

The last game of the day was the Youth League boys, a home crowd pleaser between the Dunsborough Chargers and Vasse United.

Winger Tim Nigg started the scoring in the 15th minute and a quick response from Vasse through Dylan McGregor at 21 minutes, Vasse scored again 9 minutes later and Tim Nigg scored again at the next half.

James Black then started up with some impressive runs and scored 2 more goals for Dunsborough leaving the final score 4-2.

It lived up to its main event billing, with Dunsborough taking it up to the Vasse team who were unbeaten all season.

The day ended with the LNJSA season presentations

Special thanks to all involved especially the Dunsborough Junior Soccer Club.
