Margaret River Raiders 0 V Capel Wolves 8
The second game of the season saw the Raiders come up against a strong and well drilled Wolves team. Wolves began stronger and put immediate pressure on our back line.
Their experience of the bigger pitch showed with them taking an early 2 goal advantage.
Raiders centre backs Liam Mattinson and Angus Dowding (players award) worked hard against the Wolves attack, but couldn’t stop them increasing the lead before the break.
The half time talk was about more talk and pressure on both player and ball from all the Raiders. The players took this to the pitch and with a few position changes put in spirited performance . Claudia Jakovich (players award) didn’t stop running and combined well with Caleb Smirke in the middle.
Vasse 5 V Dunsbourough 0
The much awaited first game for Vasse Eagles was played in sunshine. Unfazed by the delayed start time a fairly even contest emerged with both sides playing solid passages of play.
The Vasse defenders led by Somer proved to be a great team. Tobie opened vasses scoring in the first half, which spurred on Dunsborough to have some great attempt on goals only to be denied every time by goalie Tyler.
After halftime the eagles stepped up with great team work by all especially Tate Tobie and Ethan four more found the net.
Midfield jaxon was like a terroir nipping at the heels of any dunsborough player with the ball.
Dunsborough never gave up pushing Vasse the entire game Well done vasse eagles a great first game, with all players doing very well, man of the match was Tobie
Margaret River Glory 4 def. Cornerstone Crusaders 0
A sunny day and promising ground conditions awaited Margaret River Glory for their first U13 match of the 2012 season.
Undeterred by a late start, Glory settled into the game early in the first half and played a strong attacking game.
The Crusaders’ defence was challenged but they were successful in fending of Glory until the pressure became too much and a handball error forced them into a penalty situation.
Margaret River Power 2 v St. Joes 5
Margaret River Power hosted St. Joes for the first round of the Knock-out Cup competition and the setting couldn’t have been better. Both teams had good reason to feel confident going into this fixture on the back of recent solid performances in the League.
The Power had the better of the early play and once again showed great patience in building their attack. Conor Heydon had a great chance early but was unlucky not to find the target. Soon afterwards though the crowd welcomed back from his 2 month break Luca Marill when he calmly steered a cross into the back of the net to put the Power ahead.
St. Joes responded almost immediately with a great breakaway and the shot left Tyron Bradshaw in goals with little hope of stopping the equalizer.
Geographe Bay Seasiders- 0 v Margaret River Power- 1
Last Saturday saw the last round of the league played out in gritty style at Busselton’s Barnard Park. The hosts needing only a draw to win the league from the Angels, who had lost their final fixture in the preceding game, must have felt quietly confident as they have ridden on the back of a huge goal difference that most clubs could only dream of.
When these teams last met in was M/R taking the honours and we were not fazed by the task on this day. If it were a draw we would have finished in fourth. Unable to finish second the Power were keen to hold onto third place so nothing less than a win was acceptable.
As expected both teams were solid in defence and busy in attack but chances were hard to come by. Both midfields were competing hard, cancelling one another out so the trend was to play wide and try and build a chance. The Power, with a slight wind advantage were inching out the best chances and when a hard running Kai Emslie ran on to a great through ball from Creed McKinon the crowd held its’ breathe to see what this novice player could produce.
A perfect day for football ended in a near perfect display from the hosts as they reversed the result from the previous meeting earlier this season.
The game was played in a great spirit with both teams showing they were quite capable of attacking but it was the Power who continued on their recent great build up play. Nathan Doig was finding great space in the left of midfield and his early crosses were giving the Giants a headache. Creed McKinon opened the scoring for the home side with some great follow up play to an earlier shot.
Cornerstone was on the back foot and Jed Mattinson got his name on the scoresheet with a lovely header from an equally good corner kick. Cornerstone were far from going into their shell though and themselves took advantage of the Power playing too deep and managed quick goals.
M/R were quick to answer with Creed turning at the top of the penalty area and driving a ball into the roof of the net to give the home team a slight lead at half time.
The Power travelled to Busselton to meet the much improved GMAS team. Winning the toss the home side would hope to capitalise on a stiff wind advantage but the visitors held them well with the usual staunch defence from Hamish White, Jared Smirke, Kai Emslie and Connor White.
The Power were controlling play and patiently building their attack and making many chances. As was the case last week the last shot on goal let us down but the real positive was the build up play to supply the opportunity to shoot. Ironically the only goal scored in the first half was from a penalty after Creed McKinon was felled in the penalty area. The penalty was neatly put away by Jed Mattinson on the second attempt after the first was disallowed.
In the second term the visitors, with the wind advantage, were able to keep consistent attacking pressure on their opposition. Tarn Staverley was enjoying an out field run after have several fantastic weeks operating at goalkeeper.
Vasse Ravens 2 Vs GBFC 5
The first 10 minutes sees Caelin Langley thinking on his feet taking the ball down to goal passing across to Fraser who collides spectacularly with GBFC goalie knocking Frase out for the duration of the game with a right knee injury.
GBFC scores from a strong Corey Bennett, with fine and determined play from Ethan Piggott not quite enough to deflect the moment. Corey scores again with some desperate blocking by Tyler Atkinson but it is not to be.
It’s a well fought first half and Caelin scores again before the whistle. Jaxon Rynvis exhibits some courageous foot skill in amongst boys head and shoulders above him, always on and in his game.
Congratulations to Caelin, Corey, Ben Papasergio and Jack Halls for scoring in this hard won game.
Under stormy skies these two team rose to a new level of commitment to entertain the very supportive crowd that cheered on every passage of play.
M/R Power were fielding a skeleton team with a third of the group unable to train this week due to illness. They certainly showed up to play and a handful then went on to play another game in the Under 15’s.
A real arm wrestle developed in an end to end affair that saw both teams miss opportunities they would go on to rue. The Power I believe made the better chances and were unlucky not to score with great build-up play that saw Hudson Moore, Jed Mattinson and Tyron Bradshaw all find the keeper from close range.
Vasse were first to score after some great, fast counter-attack and the Power were quick to answer through Hudson who ran onto a beautiful through ball, took aim and blasted it past the goalkeeper. Vasse went on to score another before the break.
Vasse Ravens 4 VS Margaret River Power 2
First goal of the day scored for Vasse by Fraser Harrison with a flank run and setup kick across the goal from Ethan Piggott making it impossible to miss. At almost half time, Margs go for goal, stopped by a sure handed Tyler Atkinson. Balls are flying at Tyler who reliably deflects MR attempts. What a stalwart on the back line he is.
Ethan Piggott scored again for Vasse backed up with top team work from Caelin Langley. MR putting in a strong defence down the line during an evenly paced game.
Caelin Langley scores a third for Vasse nearly at end of game and in the last minutes Bailey Rice kicks a fourth for Vasse.
St. Joes Stingers 2 v Margaret River Power 4
A week of weather that had everything made way for a game of soccer that had even more. In the freezing conditions these 2 teams showed great skills and determination in what would turn out to be a nail biter.
The Power had the best of the play early with some great build up play to finally see Creed McKinon slot the first goal away. Our midfield were a little out of position which then saw the Stingers able to run at our back line that had a nervous start.
Creed added to his earlier goal after some great patience again shown out on the left through Nathan Doig who worked the ball into the centre well to set up the finish.
Hudson Moore was kept busy in goals but held his ground well despite the Stingers finding the back of the net just before the break.
Vasse Ravens 6 versus Cornerstone Giants 1
A solid game in drizzle and biting cold, both teams worked hard for possession.
Tait Spowart kicked the first goal for Ravens in the first 5 minutes lifting the spirits of the team. Ethan Piggott, Myles Carroll and Caelin Langley all scored and the team backed them up with football finesse and a few acrobatics.
It was a hard fought game with some nice passing between Aiden Burns and Jaxon Rynvis. Cody Howe put in some hard runs, goal attempts and strong defense work. Tyler Atkinson did himself and his team very proud with at least 7 skilled goal saves.
Tobie ‘the boot’ Rodgers acquitted himself as did Bailey Rice and Harry Shingles. Congratulations to Jack Wallace of Cornerstone and a good effort put in by CS no 6 and 13.
Farewell and thank you to Cody Howe, enjoy the snow mate!
Margaret River Power- 3 v GBFC Seasiders- 2
The Power played host to arguably the best team in the competition and this match produced the goods from the first whistle to the last.
I moved a couple of players around and went into the game intent on stopping an opposition that has a healthy goal difference to date. In contrast to last week we expected to have to defend our way out of this game and the players rose firmly to the challenge.
The Seasiders were the first to score through a perfectly weighted through ball that gave keeper Tyron Bradshaw his first headache for the day. He made good position but was unable to stop a well placed finish to an excellent set up. The Power were not fazed by this setback and played fantastic football to build their attack. Kai Emslie was like a young pup off the leash with heaps of run up front but it was Creed McKinon who came off the bench to finish well after he looked to have carried the ball a little close to the keeper.
The Power led at the break courtesy of a powerful, low drive from Tarn Staveley from long range that pierced the Seasiders defense and left the keeper with little to do but retrieve the ball from his net.
Capel Wolves v.s St Josephs
The game kicked off in the sunshine after 24hrs of rain, both teams played very well and had a full squad of players.
Capel scored some great goals from Kyle, Justice and Keenan after some great running down the wings. Jorja ran hard and Douglas couldn’t be stopped all over the ground. Ethan and Nathaniel made St Josephs work through the midfield and Alexander and Jack showed great commitment to the ball.
Steve was rock solid in defence and Ashton was fantastic in goals and shows great promise in his goal keeping abilities. St Joseph scored some awesome goals at the start of the second half with their sharp passing and excellent positioning.
Congratulations to all the players, you played very well and your passing and defence has improved!!! I am enjoying coaching you all.
Vasse hosted M/R in Busselton on a wet and wild morning and the Power arrived early to prepare for what was to be a great battle.
The Power were without a couple of regulars but welcomed back from holiday Kai Emslie, and new addition Creed McKinon was the perfect partner to Kelly Castle up front.
With Braeden Canna winning the toss M/R enjoyed a slight wind advantage in the first half and made many quality attacking raids that resulted in near misses from close range. The eventual reward came from the boot of Jed Mattinson when he placed another goal from outside the penalty area after some great play down the left flank through Nathan Doig and Creed.
